Acc 203 Mgt Accounting

Course description: An introduction to the process of gathering and analyzing accounting data for use by managers in planning, decision-making, and controlling.  Topics include basic cost concepts, cost volume-profit relationships, relevant cost decisions, capital investment decisions, performance evaluation, and budgeting. The student uses spreadsheet software.

Required textbook: An Introduction to Management Accounting: A User Perspective, 2nd Edition by Werner and Jones

Instructional objectives: 1) To develop a conceptual and interpretative framework for understanding the use of cost information in managing an organization 2) To understand how quantitative and qualitative information can be used to improve organizational processes and inform decision making 3) To develop a familiarity with cost terminology 4) To develop skills in using spreadsheets to solve problems and make recommendations to management 5) To develop persuasive skills in making management presentations

Teaching procedure: This course combines classroom presentation of key chapter themes followed by in class individual and group work.  In many ways this class organization resembles a lab in which students work on the topics with the guidance of the instructor.  For each chapter the class will meet in a computer lab to work on the spreadsheet project and its accompanying memo.  At the time we begin the spreadsheet application activity, the instructor will provide the instructions for the memo.  All assignments are to be emailed.

Tentative Test/assignment schedule: For each chapter there will be an in class test, email application activity, and a spreadsheet with accompanying memo.    On average there will be a test every two weeks.  There are no due dates for the email application activities or spreadsheets.  However, the student is advised to submit the work in a timely fashion so that corrections may be made and the work resubmitted if necessary.  All emails and spreadsheet activities are due the last day of class. 

Basis for Student grading: Chapter tests are weighted 34% of the grade.  In class tests may be made-up if arrangements are made with the instructor.  In the case of illness, the student must make arrangements with the instructor to make-up the test upon his or her return to class.  Email assignments are weighted 33% of the grade and the spreadsheet activities are weighted 33% of the grade. 

Attendance policy: The student is expected to be in class on time.   Although there is no penalty to the student for missing classes or being late, the student may discover that missing classes or being late will jeopardize their learning experience as well as being disruptive to the class members.
